The Nwa Council was created by Presidential Decree No. 63/250 on July 4, 1963. Initially, the council covered 43 villages, but following an administrative restructuring, one village (Kounchoun) was transferred to Bankim Subdivision in the Adamawa Region, reducing the total number of villages to 42. In its early years, the council operated under a multi-party system, but in 1972, all political parties were merged into the Cameroon National Union (CNU). This led to the appointment of government administrators to run the council. However, with the return of multi-party politics in 1992, the first democratically elected mayor was Kame Stephen (Social Democratic Front - SDF), followed by Yakabong Paul (CPDM, 2007) and Dr. Ngomfe David Loma Moloh (CPDM, 2010 - Present).
