Nwa council was created by presidential decree number 63/250 of 04 07 1963. At creation, it had 43 villages namely; Adere, Lus, Bang, Manang, Mbat, jui, Koffa, Mballa, Mbah, Mbepji, Kom, Bom, Gom, Rom, Saam, Ngung, Ncha, Bitui, Ngung, Kwaja, Ntong, Faam, Kwak, Sih, Yang, Nwa, Nkot, Mbem, Mfe, Lih, Ngomkow, Ngom (Sabongari), Nyurong, Nwat, mbirikpa, Ngu, Nguri, Nwati, Ntem, Kurt -Gamfe, Jator- Gwembe, Kounchoum, Nking and Ntim, a total surface area of 1650km2.
However, recently the number of villages dropped by one, with Kounchoun having been given to Bankim sub division of Mayo Banyo division, Adamawa Region and the surface area of the land decreased to approximately 1500km2.
At creation, the council enjoyed multi-party politics but this changed in 1972 with the fusion of all existing political parties into one; the Cameroon National Union (CNU). From this point in time, the council was run by administrators; appointed by the central administration in Yaoundé, the last of whom was Chief Fowanko John. This changed in 1992 with democratic election of Mayors. The first Mayor to be elected democratically was Mr. Kame Stephen of the SDF Party, who ruled from 1992 to 2007. The next was Mr. Yakabong Paul of the CPDM Party who ruled from 2007 to 2010, and then, Dr. Ngomfe David Loma Moloh of the CPDM Party who ruled from 2010 till 2019, when he died and was replaced by By his first deputy Mr. Menyong Lawrence Ngansah.
